April 23, 2025 | Muscat – In a remarkable achievement, Omani students have secured the top position internationally in the prestigious Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) programme’s environmental research competition. This accomplishment underscores Oman’s commitment to fostering scientific inquiry and environmental stewardship among its youth.
A Triumph in Environmental Research
The GLOBE programme, an international science and education initiative sponsored by NASA, provides students worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, contributing meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment. This year, students from Al Shifa bint Abdullah School in North Batinah Governorate achieved first place in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Their research, titled “The Effect of Soil Type on the Growth of Roses,” was conducted by students Teimaa bint Abdullah al Ansariyah and Mahra bint Suleiman al Mazrouiyah. Utilizing GLOBE protocols and specialized equipment, they investigated how different soil types affect rose cultivation. Their findings revealed that nutrient-rich, low-salinity sandy clay soil provides an optimal environment for rose growth, offering practical insights for local agriculture and contributing to sustainable farming practices in Oman. creativemind-me.com+1Times of Oman+1
Consistent Excellence in GLOBE Competitions
This is not the first time Omani students have excelled in the GLOBE programme. In previous years, Omani schools have consistently achieved high rankings, reflecting the country’s dedication to environmental education. For instance, in 2020, Um Hani School for Basic Education in Dakhliyah Governorate was ranked first in the MENA region for their research on the effects of sulfur water irrigation on soil and land cover. creativemind-me.comMuscat DailyTimes of Oman+2Muscat Daily+2Muscat Daily+2
Additionally, in 2021, seven scientific studies by Omani students were selected from among 234 international submissions for the GLOBE Environmental Program. Five Omani schools received the highest evaluation grade of four stars, demonstrating the depth and quality of environmental research conducted by students across the Sultanate. Muscat Daily
Government Support and Educational Impact
The Ministry of Education in Oman has been instrumental in integrating the GLOBE programme into the national curriculum since its implementation in 2009. Currently, the programme is active in 60 schools across the country, engaging students in hands-on environmental research. Through protocols focusing on water, atmosphere, soil, and land cover, students gain practical experience in scientific methods, data collection, and analysis. Muscat Daily
Ahmed al Balushi, Director of the Department of Science Sector at the Oman National Commission of Education, Culture, and Science, emphasized the significance of this achievement:
“Omani students winning first place globally reflects the serious efforts made by the Ministry of Education and the programme’s officials in promoting scientific research and developing research skills among students by studying various environmental issues.” creativemind-me.com
