Muscat, May 19, 2025 — The Royal Oman Police (ROP), in coordination with Muscat Municipality, has announced temporary traffic changes and roadworks at the Al Zulfa Roundabout in Al Seeb. These changes are part of an ongoing initiative to improve traffic flow and road safety in the capital region.
According to an official statement, Al Seeb Street before Al Zulfa Roundabout (towards the Muscat exit) will be partially closed from the evening of Tuesday, November 19 until the morning of Sunday, November 24, 2024. This closure will allow for essential road maintenance and repairs in the area, which has seen a significant increase in traffic in recent years.
The Muscat Municipality urged motorists to exercise caution while driving through the area during this period. Drivers are advised to follow traffic instructions, use alternative routes where possible, and plan ahead to avoid unnecessary delays.
In addition to road maintenance, the ROP has implemented temporary restrictions on truck movement during peak hours as part of a broader strategy to reduce congestion — especially during the busy Ramadan season.
The truck restrictions are in effect during the following hours:
Sunday to Thursday: 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Saturday: 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
These restrictions apply to major roads, including Sultan Qaboos Road from the Al Qurum Interchange to the Khatmat Milaha Border Post, and Sultan Thuwayni Road from the Burj Al Sahwa Roundabout to the Bidbid Bridge.
The ROP has called on truck drivers to adhere to these restrictions in the interest of public safety and to support smoother traffic flow during high-traffic periods.
While the authorities are confident that these changes will lead to long-term improvements, some members of the public have expressed frustration. Residents have shared concerns on social media, noting that the changes, in some cases, have increased travel time rather than reducing it.
“I used to pass Al Mouj by 8:05, now it’s closer to 8:20. They say they’re managing traffic, but it seems worse,” said one commuter. Others echoed similar concerns, urging for more efficient traffic management solutions.
Despite these challenges, both the ROP and Muscat Municipality remain committed to improving the road network. Plans are underway to expand key highways, including the Muscat Expressway, which will eventually be widened to six lanes to accommodate the growing number of vehicles in the city.
During Ramadan, the ROP has also issued safety guidelines for drivers. These include avoiding last-minute travel before Iftar, ensuring drivers are well-rested, and refraining from mobile phone use while driving. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use designated lanes and crossings.
The ROP continues to urge the public to stay informed about roadwork updates and follow traffic advisories through official channels.
These traffic adjustments at Al Zulfa Roundabout represent part of a larger strategy to modernize Oman’s infrastructure and ensure safer, smoother travel for all road users.
