New Delhi, May 31, 2025 — India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has firmly denied allegations from Bangladesh’s interim administration, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, that Indian media outlets are engaged in a campaign to delegitimize Bangladesh’s transitional leadership.
In a statement released earlier this week, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India’s commitment to fostering a “democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive” Bangladesh. He reiterated that India seeks a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, grounded in mutual trust and respect.
The MEA’s response comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Hasina’s departure, prompted by widespread student-led protests, led to the establishment of an interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Bangladesh’s interim government has accused Indian media of disseminating misinformation, particularly concerning minority rights and alleged extremist influences within the new administration. Analysts suggest that some Indian media narratives align closely with the perspectives of the ousted Awami League, potentially aiming to undermine the legitimacy of the current government.
In response, the MEA summoned Bangladesh’s Acting High Commissioner to India, Md. Nural Islam, conveying India’s desire for a positive bilateral relationship and expressing concern over statements from Bangladeshi authorities that portray India negatively.
Despite the diplomatic strain, India maintains that the people of Bangladesh are the primary stakeholders in the bilateral relationship. The MEA has highlighted India’s development cooperation and multifaceted engagements with Bangladesh, including in areas such as connectivity, trade, power, and energy, as efforts geared towards the benefit of the Bangladeshi people.
As both nations navigate this period of political transition in Bangladesh, the MEA urges restraint and constructive dialogue to ensure regional stability and the strengthening of bilateral ties.
