Muscat, April 23, 2025 — In a coordinated operation, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) arrested three individuals for attempting to smuggle narcotic substances into the Sultanate of Oman while also attempting to enter the country illegally. The arrests took place along the coastal region of South Al Batinah Governorate and mark a significant success in Oman’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
According to an official statement released by the ROP, the suspects — whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed — were apprehended by the Coast Guard Unit in collaboration with the Directorate General for Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. The arrest occurred after authorities received intelligence indicating a planned smuggling attempt via maritime routes.
Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Sea
Acting on the intelligence tip, the Coast Guard launched a maritime surveillance operation over the weekend, focusing on a suspicious vessel approaching Oman’s territorial waters from the Arabian Sea. Upon interception near the shores of South Al Batinah, the vessel was found to be carrying a significant quantity of illegal narcotic substances concealed in secret compartments.
The seized substances are currently undergoing forensic testing to confirm their type and quantity, though preliminary analysis suggests the presence of heroin and crystal methamphetamine. The ROP has confirmed that the estimated street value of the confiscated drugs could run into hundreds of thousands of Omani Rials.
The suspects were taken into custody without resistance and have been transferred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation and legal proceedings. The authorities have also impounded the vessel, which is believed to be part of a wider smuggling network operating in the region.
Illegal Entry Raises Security Concerns
In addition to drug smuggling charges, the three individuals are facing legal action for attempting to enter Oman without proper documentation or authorization. Illegal entry into Oman is considered a serious offense, with the country maintaining strict border security protocols and immigration laws to protect national security and public order.
“The attempt to infiltrate the country illegally while smuggling dangerous narcotics is a grave threat to both our national security and the health and safety of our citizens,” said a spokesperson for the ROP. “We will continue to intensify patrols along our borders and coastal areas to prevent such crimes.”

In 2024 alone, Oman reported over 50 cases of maritime drug smuggling attempts, resulting in the arrest of more than 120 individuals and the seizure of several tons of illicit substances. The government has also enhanced regional cooperation with neighboring countries and international bodies to dismantle cross-border smuggling syndicates.
Public Awareness and Rehabilitation Programs
Beyond enforcement, Oman has also invested in public awareness campaigns and rehabilitation initiatives to combat drug abuse domestically. The National Committee for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, working under the Ministry of Health, continues to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse through school programs, community workshops, and media outreach.
Additionally, the Sultanate offers rehabilitation services for individuals suffering from addiction, aiming to reintegrate them into society as productive citizens.
Legal Proceedings Underway
The three suspects arrested in the latest operation will be prosecuted under Omani law, which imposes strict penalties on drug trafficking and illegal entry, including long-term imprisonment and hefty fines. In severe cases, those found guilty may face capital punishment, reflecting the seriousness with which Oman treats such crimes.
