Muscat, May 22, 2025 — Oman joined the world in celebrating International Biodiversity Day under the theme “Be Part of the Plan”, highlighting its commitment to protecting the country’s rich natural heritage.
Events across the Sultanate included exhibitions, tree planting, beach cleanups, and educational programs. In Muscat, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs launched the national campaign “Oman’s Nature: Our Shared Responsibility” to encourage community involvement in conservation efforts.
Oman’s diverse landscapes — from deserts and mountains to coral reefs and mangroves are home to rare and endangered species like the Arabian leopard, green sea turtles, and Arabian oryx. These ecosystems play a vital role in ensuring climate stability, water security, and sustainable livelihoods for future generations.
Youth played a key role in the celebrations, with over 100 schools conducting biodiversity-themed activities such as art competitions, science projects, and awareness campaigns. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding protected areas and enforcing stronger conservation policies aligned with global environmental agreements.
Biodiversity is everyone’s responsibility,” said Dr. Salim Al Hashmi from the ministry. “Together, we can protect Oman’s natural treasures for future generations.
