Al Khabourah, Oman – May 2, 2025 — A tragic incident unfolded at Al Khabourah Beach in North Al Batinah Governorate on Friday as two young siblings drowned while swimming in rough sea conditions, according to local authorities.

The victims, both minors, were reportedly enjoying the water when they were caught in strong currents. Despite efforts by nearby beachgoers and emergency responders, the children could not be rescued in time. Emergency teams from the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) responded swiftly to the distress call, but the siblings were pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the water.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as harrowing. “We saw them playing near the shoreline just minutes before,” said one local resident. “Then suddenly, we noticed a commotion. People were shouting, trying to help, but the waves were too strong.”

The children were said to be on a family outing, a common practice during the warm months when families across Oman head to coastal areas to relax. Al Khabourah Beach is a popular destination in North Al Batinah, often frequented by both locals and visitors. However, locals have long voiced concerns over the lack of warning signs and lifeguards on certain stretches of the beach, particularly during seasons of high tide or turbulent sea conditions.

Officials have not yet released the names or ages of the victims, respecting the family’s request for privacy during this period of mourning. However, grief has rippled through the local community, with condolences pouring in from residents and public figures alike.

In a brief statement, authorities urged the public to remain vigilant while visiting coastal areas. “We deeply regret the tragic loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family. We strongly advise citizens and residents to exercise caution when swimming, especially during times of unpredictable sea behavior,” a CDAA representative said.

The Oman Meteorology Department had earlier issued warnings about changing sea conditions in various coastal regions, including possible strong currents and waves reaching moderate to high levels. While these alerts are typically broadcast via social media and local news, not all beachgoers may be aware of or pay heed to such warnings.

This tragedy has reignited calls for stricter safety measures at public beaches. Community leaders are urging the installation of visible hazard signs, deployment of trained lifeguards during peak hours, and improved public awareness campaigns about sea safety.

One marine safety advocate commented, “Every year, we hear of similar heartbreaking incidents. These are preventable deaths. With proper infrastructure, education, and a proactive approach, we can save lives.”

In the wake of the incident, several local municipalities have reportedly begun reviewing their safety policies for public recreation areas. Residents in Al Khabourah and surrounding towns are also organizing a community meeting to discuss measures to improve beach safety and prevent further tragedies.

As the community mourns the loss of two young lives, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers the sea can pose — even in seemingly calm conditions — and the urgent need for awareness and preventive action.

The bodies of the siblings were transferred to a local hospital for formal procedures, and funeral arrangements are expected to take place within the coming days in accordance with local customs.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are expected to issue a detailed report in the following days.
